At Electrolysis/Laser Associates LLC, Mary and Nancy agree that the first question from the majority of their clients is . . .

How does laser hair removal work?
The laser beam passes through the skin to the hair root. This process destroys the follicle's ability to grow.

How many treatments will I need to clear the area?
The average number of treatments is anywhere between 4-8 times depending on skin and hair color. Because hair grows in cycles, to be affective, the treatments should be performed at 6-8 weeks intervals when the follicles are in the active growth cycle.

Is laser hair removal painful?
Some areas of the skin are more sensitive than others. Some individuals tolerate pain better than others. Most clients describe a laser burst as a "warm tingling sensation." The Candela Gentlelase instrument that is used also has a dynamic cooling agent that not only protects the skin but also makes the treatment more comfortable. If requested, a topical anesthetic can be applied.

Who is the best candidate for laser hair removal?
The best candidate is a fair skinned person with dark hair. Because the laser beam only recognizes dark pigment, someone with white, blonde, gray or red hair is better suited for electrolysis. That procedure is not as fast as laser but it is the only permanent solution for light hair and very much worth the time and effort.

What precautions should the client be aware of before starting laser hair removal?
The biggest caution that Mary and Nancy stress is "NO TANNING" while in treatment. Because tanning brings out more pigment in the skin, the laser beam can be attracted to the pigment, which can cause an adverse reaction. This does not mean that the client has to hide from the sun. They just recommend wearing a SPF 30 or more to prevent tanning the area that is being treated.
